Homemade Apple Sauce

As a kid how did you like your applesauce? Smothered in cinnamon? Do you like it mixed with pears? Do you like chunky applesauce? To let you in on my preference, it’s chunky with cinnamon. I also absolutely love pear mixed in my applesauce too.

Growing up I remember making homemade apple sauce with my mom. We used this old school grinder. Who else remembers one of these?? We used to grind and grind and grind. It was a lot of work and I always said, “mom my arm hurts I need a break”

Today, I wanted to make applesauce, but I just traveled all week and so I just wanted it done quick! I also wanted to can it because oh my gosh do I love canned applesauce.

I took all the skins off my apples and cut them up into small chunks and tossed them on the crock pot to cook so I could relax.

I topped my apples with 1 tablespoon of cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, and 1/2 cup of water. I went with brown sugar because it’s sweet but I needed less to give that flavor that I wanted. I cooked them on low in my crock pot for 2 hours. It was the perfect time.

To finish I mashed with a potato masher and mix together with a whisk to evenly disperse the flavor. Like I said, I love my chunky applesauce with cinnamon.

All canned and ready for the basement!

Homemade Applesauce Recipe

  • 10-12 apples skins removed and cored
  • 1 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water

Cook on low in crock pot for 2 hours. Mash to your desired texture. If you want a smooth creamy applesauce, use a stainless steel strainer or a food processor with a sauce maker attachment.
