Cast Iron Lasagna

This is only the best lasagna you will ever have. However, you should treat it as a treat meal because it has more carbs than I normally prefer and it does have an exceptional amount of cheese products in it which is high in fat.

When my fiancé and I started dating he said, I don’t eat pasta. He said it’s just too filling and he doesn’t care to eat it. For a long time, I never made it. My mom had us over for dinner a night and she had lasagna. I told Ryan don’t knock it till your try my mom’s, it’s simply the best. He loved it and permitted me to make it, occasionally.

I couldn’t resist though, trying to make it a little healthier and to use my leftover stuffed peppers to really perfect the flavor. After many calls to my mom on how to layer this damn lasagna right, and one failed attempt it turned out perfect. Please give me a chance to explain my failed attempt. Our nieces were here visiting, I was sooo distracted playing with them, I took a quick break to assemble the lasagna and I layered my entire lasagna with no noodles. It wasn’t until I pulled it out of the oven and noticed all my noodles still in the pot, I had realized my favorite little ladies really distracted me.

However, this time it was absolutely delicious. It was the best lasagna I have ever made.

  • 1 pound Turkey Burger
  • 2 Sausage stuffed mild peppers

  • 1 cup Ricotta Cheese
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese

  • 1 Egg

Canned Items

  • 1 Jar Spaghetti sauce (your favorite brand)

  • Whole Wheat Lasagna Noodles

  • Italian Seasoning

In a large sauce pan filled with water, bring to a boil and add your lasagna noodles. How I determine how many noodles I need, I honestly lay my noodles out in my dish then decide how many layers I will have. I made three layers in my cast iron pan. Let water boil until noodles are tender.

While your noodles are boiling, heat a stove top pan, cook and chop your turkey burger.

Next you will prepare your ricotta cheese layer. In a small bowl add 1 cup of ricotta cheese and one egg and mix together.

In a separate bowl, cup and chop your stuffed banana peppers. These can be fresh cooked or leftovers. I use my leftovers. They are absolutely delicious.

Let’s put it all together once we have our layers ready. These layers are tested, been used for years, and will give you the most delicious lasagna you will ever make. As you make these layers, you don’t want super thick layers just sprinkle layers.

Follow below in order:

  • Sauce on bottom of pan
  • Layer of noodles
  • Ricotta cheese (about one spoonful per noodle)
  • Turkey burger
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Sauce
  • Noodles
  • Ricotta cheese
  • Chopped stuffed peppers
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Sauce
  • Noodles
  • Sauce
  • Mozzarella cheese

It really depends on the size of pan if you have any sauce left and just how saucy you are making your lasagna. However, I always rinse my spaghetti sauce jar out with a 1/2 cup of water and pour over my lasagna pan. This creates the most juicy, delicious lasagna. If you are making a smaller pan and have leftover sauce, just take a measuring cup to add the water. You should drizzle the water around the edge of the pan. You do not want to just dump on top.

In my years, my mom has forgot the water. Let me tell you– it’s important!! It makes it juicy.

Also last most important step next to the water– cover your lasagna while it bakes!!!

When finished– sprinkle with Italian seasoning.

I hope you love this recipe as much as I have growing up all my life.
